Caught this Belted Kingfisher with takeout as he had been flying back and forth across the water. I needed the longer lens but just happy to find him.

This Belted Kingfisher was moving from branch to branch to try and get a good lookout position. Apparently it is not only a good spot to look for fish but a good spot for a spider to catch his meal.

This Belted Kingfisher had the pond pretty much to himself, only a couple of ducks about. I was surprised at this shot as I didn't have the long lens on at the time and he was busy shopping I managed to get fairly close.

Not a lot of shore for the shore birds to hang out on so it is pretty exciting to see one here. This is my first time photographing a Spotted Sandpiper.

The Myrtle Warbler is pretty small so I was surprised I was able to see this guy as he was down low and in the brush. That yellow rump really stands out.

The mother Barred Owl wasn't very far from the nest. It kind of looks like she has one eye opened and watching. The interesting thing was after photographing her and the baby she and the dad starting hooting back and forth. If I heard everything correctly, she wanted take out for dinner and he was wanting a fresh kill for dinner. Not sure who won the argument.

The baby Barred Owl are getting big. There are two in the nest but I have never seen them at the same time. This is tough shot to get as there are a lot of limbs between me the nest and the later we are into spring the more green that covers the distance.

Get around some water and you will run into Red-winged Black Birds on fences, cattails, phone lines, etc. I find them to be the most brave birds around. I have seen them chase off hawks and even people on a golf course one time. They have a great song and the red on their wings really show during their flight.

One of the best things about a country drive are the Red-winged Black Birds that hang out in the ditches. I have always liked listening to them. That color on their wing really pops!

A nice bright spring day and a couple of Wild Turkey hens are out looking for a nesting spot. They just kept walking in front of me not really concerned about me. Me, I gave them plenty of room.

An Eastern Screech-owl perched on a little knob on the side of the tree. He never opened his eyes the entire time I was shooting him. He did move his head but I haven't seen a photo where his eyes were opened. After leaving for a bit to see what else I might find when I returned he was gone. Maybe tomorrow.

Walking along the boardwalk at Heron Haven and this Eastern Kingbird nicely setting on the railing while I took a photo of him. After a couple of photos and poof, he was gone.

There were three Red-tail Hawks soaring with a Red-winged Black bird chasing all three of them. Wasn't able to capture the black bird attacking. I swear the Red-winged Black bird has no fear!

It is always fun watching Kingfishers fishing. They aren't that big so they are hard to spot. A lot of times it is the splash of the water from their dives that attract your attention. If you are lucky enough to follow them from the water with a fish you get the enjoyment of watching them wack the fish before swallowing it.

In the winter time the Northern Cardinal will stand out in the white and black environment bringing some color to the cold season. Come spring after it starts to green up and before the full summer green tree coverage the Northern Cardinal will still stand out again offering some color among vast green background.

Here is a Cedar Waxwing eating last seasons highbush cranberries. While the berries provide for excellent jelly, jams and sauces, it is also a favorite of the Cedar Waxwing. If you are looking to get a peak at them just hang around a highbush cranberry shrub.

I have always found the Cedar Waxwing to be a very brightly colored bird. They always fly in groups so if you see one, look again because there should be plenty about.

You always hear them before you see them, at least in experience. Then it takes a minute to find them as they are fairly small. The neat part is to watch them after they have caught a fish. This day I didn't see him catch anything.

There is that time between winter and summer where the birds are out finding mates and the green foliage is just starting to come out but it hasn't overtaken the view. This male Northern Cardinal was looking for a partner for this year. It is amazing to me just how loud these guys are when they are calling.

Even in springtime a Norther Cardinal will stand out, especially before the leaves come out. This guy was calling for a mate and it took but a few minutes to find him in the tree top. The tree buds are popping, and the Norther Cardinal are singing for a mate, it must be springtime in the Midwest.

It is funny how you can hear a Kingfisher before you can see them and they are quick. If you look closely you can see the fish in his mouth and watching them beat it about before swallowing his meal is something I find very amazing.

A very popular location for woodpeckers. Here a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker seems to have her nest completed in this dead tree limb. She is just up the limb from a Red-headed Woodpecker. A couple of years ago this tree housed a family of Red-headed Woodpeckers. Maybe I will get some shots of the young ones in time.

Red-bellied Woodpecker is working on a new home in a dead tree. This dead tree is high value property. Just up the limb a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker and a couple of years ago I watch Red-headed Woodpeckers raise a family. As the nest is built on the underside of the limb I just hope they don't fall out. Hope I get to see the little ones.

Must be nest building season for the Swallows as Heron Haven was covered with them skimming the water. They move so fast and have such an erratic flight pattern they are hard to capture in flight.

Found a Belted Kingfisher after he had caught a fish for dinner. It is funny to watch them when they catch something as they whack the catch. This one spent 24 minutes whacking his catch before he finally eat it and flew away. It is fun when you can catch a bird flight.

This little bird landed on a fence wire above my head, not 10 feet away from me. Slowly, very slowly I moved my camera up to my eye to get a shot. Success! He gave me a large amount of time to shoot him, as long as I didn't move.

It Christmas day and I am waiting for my big Christmas meal with my family when what to my wondering eyes should appear but a Red-tailed hawk looking for his Christmas meal. He choose to land in a tree with lots of branches so getting a shot was pretty hard. On the plus side he gave me a long time to get a shot as he wasn't in a hurry to leave. It is great to see the recovery of our hawks and eagles.

This male Belted Kingfisher landed fairly close in his hunt for a meal. I missed his dive for a meal but he did catch something as he took off across the pond to eat. I just wished he would have landed on the other side of the twigs. You know they are around because you always hear them before they show up.

The nest was clear across the pond and I only spotted it because of the adult male Red-winged Black Bird flying into the bush to feed his young ones. It is so hard to find a active nest for the Red-wings since they build deep into the brush.

There was a flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers flying about and catching insects. They seemed to like the tree just in front of me to perch in which was great. I followed this turkey very carefully. He was walking in the brush which prevented a photo. He finally came out of the brush and walked across the parking lot.

I grew up on a farm next to a river which means the ditches always had water running. Above these ditches were poles with wire strung between them. On the wires were the Red-winged Blackbird singing. They have both a gorgeous song and color.

Watching a flock of Cedar Waxwings flying about and they seem to hover in the air before flying back to a perch. I finally figured it out. When they were hovering they were grabbing insects out of the air before perching to eat them. Look close at this one and you will see the insect in the beak.

These two guys were separated from their mother by a fenced in garden. They kept walking around the fence and mother was on the outside watching out for their safety.

Just as I was getting ready to snap a photo of this guy he moved to another tree. As luck would have it, where he landed had a hole in the leaves in front.

The family was out taking their exercise in flight and kept coming back to the same perch over the water.

Cedar Waxwing were out in plenty today.

Cedar Waxwing just weren't crazy about being photographed, but got one anyway.

A Kingfisher, they are a funny looking bird, but they can sure dive into the water.
