Signs fascinate me with their ability to communicate so much more than what their makers might have intended.
Or perhaps they communicate exactly what their makers intended.
Since the creator of the sign is not around for every interaction, great thought had to go into a sign in order to insure that the intended message gets conveyed.
Sometimes very little thought goes into the creation of signs and the message gets conveyed perhaps even more strongly.
I love that signs are meant to convey a certain piece of information and that they often times end up conveying so very much more.
Christina - I too am drawn to signs - their meanings - and the occasional irony or mixed message that comes along for the ride. I live in the Mission District of San Francisco - in fact Jim's Restaurant is less than two blocks from my door. I've only been with pbase for three weeks - but as I manage to get more of my portfolio posted, it will be evident that signs take a primary focus in my work. All this to say - I enjoyed seeing your portfolio and especially this sign collection. Your entire body of work is excellent. Inspired. Best wishes on smooth sailing with your dissertation. Good 'light' and joy to you.
