This picture shows the throttle for the aft engine. The second device above the red wheel is the ship's engine order telegraph, which indicates the speed and direction that the ship is to travel, as ordered from the bridge. The next device, to the left, indicates the RPM's that the engine's propeller shaft is to turn. Above these are the RPM indicator which shows how many RPM's the ship is presently making. The throttle valves are used to adjust the amount of steam going into the engine. In the South Pacific this engine Room can easily reach 120(F) degrees.
