This pontoon bridge was towed from Pugent Sound WA to Cowichan Bay BC and is anchored
at a deep sea dock. The bridge was bought by a business consortium who wanted to
dismantle the bridge, leaving just the flotation parts. This would have been done
by chopping almost the whole structure, including the control tower, ashphalt roadway,
concrete girders and street signs, into 8 inch square pieces. Right in the middle
of a sensitive estuary ecosystem. The Cowichan Bay citizens demanded an explanation
as to why it was allowed to be there in the first place, and secondly
to have it removed. The latest word is that it will be towed away starting
March 15th with a completion date of May 1st.
