Washington Theater Quincy Illinois

During the Midsummer Arts Faire in Quincy, Illinois, the interior of the Washington Theater (currently under reconstruction) was opened for public viewing on June 25 and June 26, 2005. The Washington was built and opened for vaudeville in 1924. It made a graceful transition to silver screen, and welcomed audiences until closing on September 30, 1982. An enormous civic undertaking by public and private partnerships is slowly reviving the masterpiece. Recent estimates of cost are in the 6 million dollar range to restore it to a 1000 seat performing arts center. I was allowed to enter with my camera bag on June 25, and shot several frames with my Pentax MV with the film I had loaded, Konica/Minolta ASA 200 print film. I used no flash, all shots were hand held, available light. Main auditorium lighting was a single large worklight hooked to the ceiling. Exposures were all between f:4 and f:1.7, aperture priority, some were a very long breath in duration. All images ©2005 E.J.Kowalski.
