A day trip to Sedona from Phoenix, following the typical guidebook route. First stop: Montezuma's Castle National Historic Monument - in the Verde Valley. Second stop was to take the Schnebly Hill Road from the Mogollon Rim down into Sedona...but the road was closed due to snow! I guess it isn't surprising, then, that we had a beautiful view of Humphrey's Peak outside of Flagstaff. Plan B was to take the Oak Canyon Creek road (Arizona 89) south into Sedona.

The geology of Sedona is pretty unique - many layers of rock are readily visible, one of them being a bright red sandstone. The rock is very clay-like, so the edges of many of the true red rock formations aren't as hard and craggly as, say, the granite up on the Mogollon Rim.

Anyway, it's obviously a tremendous view. I would imagine that it would take a long time for the view to get stale...and the best part is - the part that makes Sedona special - if you drive out of town any direction, it all changes to something "normal" within 10-15 miles.

Trying to name the rock formations from sometimes a fairly tight shot against a topo map may lead to errors; if you see a formation mislabeled, please let me know.
