Aechmea pineliana var. minuta

Whakatane, New Zealand

A small form of this species which will withstand light frosts and sea spray; probably hardy enough for the south and west coast of the UK. In full sun they remain strawberry pink, coral or pinky-purple, depending on soil fertility and pH, all year round. Unfortunately it appears not to be self fertile, so one clone on its own will not set seed. It does pup reasonably freely after flowering.
