Waasmunster

Waasmunster is a neighbouring village with a rich history. It has the largest superficies of all rural municipalities in Flanders.
Romans were here(high road vestiges) and tradition says that Napoleon has spent a night in an inn opposite the chapel in this gallery.
Waasmunster is on the road Lessen-Hulst and this was historically an important axis and that could explain why there are three castles here.
The oldest castle is in the hamlet Sombeke where lived a famous son:the painter Edmond Verstraeten.
In the quarter by the name "Heide"(moor/heath)is a chapel built originally in 1500.Today this quarter is well-known for brasseries, taverns and fine restaurants.Wealthy businessmen and professionals live here in luxurious villas. It's a quite quarter good for strolling and even horse-riding.
