Mira bridge

The bridge was built between 1896-1900.In the first days of WW I citizens dynamited the middle part of the bridge in an attempt to stop the invading German tanks.
Some scenes of the movie "Mira" where shot here, hence the name.
The bridge was used for traffic until 1970.The tramway between Hamme and Antwerpen also passed over the bridge.
During WWI and German occupation Hamme was in the "General Government" area and Elversele and Waasmunster in the "Etappengebiet" area and the bridge was of course a convenient checkpoint for the German authorities.
In 2002 restauration started and since 2003 the bridge is open only for pedestrians and cyclists.
