The life boat made it to 10 Mile Pt. area where the sole survivor was rescued. Leo's 4 sons would be interested in this story. I am Leo's niece in Victoria.

Reading my dad's memoirs today - I am helping him add photos. he mentions the tug "George McGregor" here is the story.. "After a year in the ship yard, I grew weary of breathing the fumes from the heating pot and took a job as a seaman on an ocean-going tugboat called the Strath. I enjoyed many things about this work, but we worked six-hour shifts, which meant twelve hours a day when we were at sea. The skipper was Stan Fraser, a stickler for spit and polish, but a fine gentleman and one of the best seamen on the west coast. The pay was not great, but we had little opportunity to spend since we were seldom in port for more than a day or two. The first mate on this tug was Swift Water Bill, an old timer who had been a river boat skipper in the Yukon. He had lots of great stories to tell and was a superb teacher of splicing rope and cable, navigation, and handling the vessel. The second mate, John Mason, was a tall, powerfully-built young fellow who became a close friend. I spent much time with him while on shore leave. John wrote his skipper�s papers and took over a smaller tug, the McGregor, owned by the same company. She capsized in a riptide off the Race Rocks six months later; John lost his life helping the sole survivor, who could not swim, cling to an overturned life boat. Shortly after the tragedy of the tug McGregor, we were towing two huge barges loaded with coal from Union Bay to Seattle. A terrible storm came up, with gale-force winds from the west and mountainous seas that plunged the bow of the tug beneath each wave and threatened to break our towline. This was this only time I ever saw our skipper sea sick along with the rest of the crew."

I have just acquired a wonderful watercolor painting of a tugboat, the RACCOON, with a Washington State registration number: WN8718K. The picture shows the boat moored at a dock with no identifiable landscape. The hull is black with a white stripe at deck level. The wheel house and other superstructure is blue and white. If anyone can provide me with information about this vessel and her owners, I would be grateful. By the way, I found the painting in an antique/jewelry store in Mesa, Arizona.

The motor yacht Golden Cell, 164' Benetti, was stranded in middle of the night off entrance to Princess Louisa Inlet in B.C. abou 1999 or 2000. Both props & rudders were destroyed rendering the yacht high & dry in the land of 18' tides. It required full salvage operation including inflatable bladders, tugs, repair operaton requiring several months at Allied Shipyard in Vancouver, BC. Would like to know why it went aground. Skipper's error? Was he trying to go through the very crooked narrow entrance at night? I'm writing a book about Princess Louisa and would like to include information in my new book. It's a tricky entrance even for a 40' boat. Betty

From Capt Ken 22-Jan-2012 20:21 The "Island Commander" is still a very able, and ready tug. She arrived on the B.C. coast to take part in the BC Halibut fishing industry, in the Gulf of Alaska, Hecate Straits, S.E. Alaska waters on January 13, 1913, built in Selby England in 1912 as the "Amdrew Kelly", one of three identical sisters. Official Number 134745, Port of Registry Grimsby, England. As Canada Shipping Act was a 'British Act' until changed 'anew' in this 21st century, she still retains ON 134745, Victoria B.C. Converted to tug and renamed, 1939-40, at North Van Ship Repair, S. foot of Chesterfield Street, North Vancouver. Portholes used were from the scrapped original CPR trans-pacific Yokohama > Vancouver steamer "Empress of Japan", which was scrapped at the same yard, early 1930's, after it's successor, the new "Empress of Japan" was built for CPR. When WWII broke out, the E of J was renamed "Empress Of Scotland". The "Island Commander has a 16' draft, a 19-A nozzle with a highly-skewed 102" x 104" 5 blade propeller, with a tri-rudder system hinging on the rear face of the nozzle, with link-bars, 1975, Star Shipyard New Westr. installed. The EMD 16 cylinder 567C engine is in perfect condition. The tug has been, and still is, owned by Capt. Ken Higgs' "Island-Sea Marine Ltd" since December 1971. A Union diesel, largest ever, was installed in 1956, to tow log barges. Higgs removed that in 1975-76, personally, with 4 workers, installed the entirely new engine room alongside a rotting pier in Gastown area of Vancouver, 1 block West of Main Street. New accommodation and wheelhouse/masters cabin installed in 1979. The old machinery was lifted out by the crane on the CPR docks, foot of Burrard Street. The tug is in great condition, but 'line-haul' towing along the BC coast has diminished tremendously, probably not to return. She was /is one of the finest vessels ever on this coast for such tows, many of them very famous. A trans-Pacific tow to China with ship in tow, to China from Seattle, then 100 miles up the Yangtze, was completed in 1996. She 'ran light' to Vladivostok, picked up a Russian submarine right at the huge Russian East Coast Naval yard, towed it to New Westminster, via west of the Queen Charlotte Islands, and West of Vancouver Island, to Juan de Fuca Strait: A 90 day round trip. New bulkhead panels forward, new frames in foc'sle and forepeak were installed in the year 2000., Allied Ship. An entirely new foc'sle was created, with 8 berths, 8 lockers, 2 settees. Main deck has 4 spacious single berth cabins, 2 fwd of galley, 2 aft., all with sinks. Master's cabin is en suite behind wheelhouse.

My father (Bob Hodder) owned the Mary Mackin for several years. I have great memories of our time on her. So sad she was burned to the water level but apparently alot of divers were able to enjoy time on her once she was under. She was truly beautiful to sail on.

Hello. I'm looking for ANY info at all on a tug that went down aprox 1958 near CAmpbell River B.C. CAnada. My grandfather was on it with one other man. The boat and men were never found. Very vague but anybody with a website taht might have info, a person with a memory of such an event or anything would be very helpful. I do know that Ripple Rock was in tact for early 1958 and that might be a possibility but I can't find anything listing missing men or boats. THANK YOU:)!!

Noticed Patti was looking for info on the Mary Mackin. I owned the Mary Mackin in the 80s and lived aboard her in Friday Harbor. The boat was purchased fron the Royal Bank after going into Forclosure, when I got her she was a mess and I spent two years redoing her, I have many of her befor and after she was restored,and have numerous articles from her binacle lights,clocks,plaques etc. One of the engine room telegraph was donated by us to Crown Z for a retirement gift for her last captain.We sold her to the last owner who let her go to ruin, and my son and I were planning a (Nite operation to rescue the Name board from her when she was on the baech at Priscilla Bay), however we were notified she had burned and was being scrapped. It was sad to see her go with such an end as she was Crown Z Flagship,and a real lady. There is a book out about the frogotten Fleet of 61,in which the author tracked down the history of the Mikkis,and tells where they were built, served, and where they ended up. The Mary Mackins sister ship was here in Seattle and sunk on the ship canal, and over the last couple years disappeared. Best regards rick

just wanted to say that my mother was the wife of CPt jack Mason who was the captain of the mcgregor that sank off Trial Island in November 1949 he sadly went down with the ship . I believe there was only 1 survivor. sad that my sister never got to emet her father . if you have any info about that time period its sinking and such or pictures it would be great if you could send me any info you have

Any one know of the tug OCEAN KING from Boston Harbour ? we re activated it took it down to Bahamas to tow a runaway oil drill ship LOUIS GULET which brok e its anchor drifeted in the Atlantic for 5t months before it was spotted on a beach with 400foot of chain holding it. We towed it back up to Walkers Cay North of Grand Bahama.

I am wondering if the 97 ft tug "Erik Foss" is still around to see? I have a picture of her as the "Gleaner" when she was still steam powered. Foss Launch and Tug company bought her in 1952 where she was fitted with a diesel engine. I would love a recent picture. Thanks. Bret.Chenoweth@comcast.net

The 'Mary Mackin' was scrapped by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans after it was abandoned, beached, and burned. Its sister ship, the 'Florence Filberg' is now stuck to the bottom in Sooke, BC and the community is trying to find a way to get rid of it.

The tug Mary Mackin burnt in Patricial Bay BC, several years ago. The sistership "Florence Filberg" sank near Seattle and was towed away to 'somewhere', late last year!

My boyfriend works on a tug boat; tug comet. I am always amazed to see such neat pictures. I can't wait until he takes me aboard to see one; he loves his job working with the boats and barges, its interesting!

Truly amazing photos. Nice work. I am trying to find out about a Captain Sommerville, who was a colorful tow boat captain. This would likely be in the early 1920's. Any info., would also be appreciated. Also, we understand he lived in North Vancouver on Keith Road. I sailed from Lake Washington to the South Pacific on a Seagoing tug (no name) only the TP 230 which belonged to the War Department. I think the Army Transport Service. She was built in a yard in Lake Washington in 1944. A tremendous boat that chugged for thousands of miles with no problems. We left her in New Guinea a few years later. Does anyone know what yard buit her or where I could find pictures of her?

Wow! awsome site! My dad (Earl Jacobson) is the chief engineer on the Hieda Chieftain, and has worked on a number of the other boats shown. IP get to come out with him sometimes, and i recodnize many of the tugs featured. Nice to see a good picture of the Chieftain... Good to have some pics of the Glenshiel, as its now on the bottom. Keep it up! it brings me back on the sea just looking at these pictures.

Looking for information My father passed away in 2006 he has always made model boats about 1-2 feet in size from the completed inner hull to little people in them from tugboat , pilot, steamship, coast gaurd cutter shrimp and fishing they are alsome and look like mini real boats, I am at a lost he had started 2 before his death and i have no clue who or what they are i think one is a pilot boat if any one could help me i could email pics of the start of these boat and some of his finished works, he asked me to finish them because he believed i could do as he could please help if you can.
