Still working on improved B&W conversion. Decided to try it on one of my favorite infra-red images. This was taken with a D70 and a screw in Harrison & Harrison IR filter which resulted in monochromatic IR images that were red/black, not B&W. That result had to be converted to B&W to achieve the normal expectation for an IR image.
To see a side-by-side comparison of my B&W result in 2005 when this image was first made with today's version go to - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/96958169 - where you'll note that the biggest difference is that I've made the latest version more "contrasty" and detailed - the blacks are blacker and the whites whiter. This may or may not be to everyone's liking since a lot of IR's attraction is in its ethereal appearance and today's version removes some of that. Of course, I can now go to either extreme and all points in between thus providing more "artistic license".
