Out bright and early walking along the edge of tall grass, weeds and wildflowers and drifted over to some large thistle bushes. Hanging off one was this butterfly who had obviously spent the night there (it was still 15-20 minutes before sunrise). It was covered with a light coat of dew on its wings and was probably a bit chilled - translation, it was going anywhere for a while. Amazingly, a the very instant that the sun came up it began slowly moving its wings - but I was done by then.
Had to use a fairly wide aperture to blur out the rest of the bush very close behind the butterfly. Anything like f/8 or f/11 brought out a lot of distracting background jaggies. This meant getting the camera sensor & the butterfly really, really parallel to one another otherwise the butterfly detail would have been lost with the nearly paper thin depth of field. f/4 for this one.
Another four shots with super macro wing detail starting at http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/image/48985073
