10/11/08 - Backyard View

Taken from behind the house we rented for a week in West Virginia. House was below a mountain meadow about 900 feet below the summit. In this scene the morning sun has just about burned off a heavy morning fog except near the mountain top. Colors are near their peak in the WV highlands, but less than 50 miles away, as we drove home today, the predominant color is still summer green. What a difference 2,000 feet makes. This year I get two or three leaf "peeping" seasons - next in Shenandoah National Park in a week or so and last here in the "lowlands" at home. Neither will have the brilliant reds & oranges of the WV highlands which are New "England-ish" without the 800 mile drive.
