Mohr's Barbara's Buttons (Marshallia mohrii)

Mohr's Barbara's Buttons is a perennial herb, reaching 2.5 feet tall. Its stems are frequently branched near the top and smooth. The alternate leaves are lance-shaped to obovate and have 3 prominent veins. Most leaves are found basally, with upper leaves reduced in size and number. The terminal buttonlike flower heads have pale violet to whitish 5-parted tubular flowers and sharply-pointed bracts. Each plant has 2-6 flowers, one per branch. Flowers from May to June. It occurs in seasonally wet, sandy clay soils in open woods and meadows and along shale-bedded stream edges. Found in the Cumberland Plateau and Ridge and Valley in northcentral Alabama and northwestern Georgia. Also known as Coosa Barbara Buttons. Listed as threatened federally and by the state of Georgia.
