Thrust

The sheer thrust and power of Aldeyjarfoss is the major eroding force for creating the fantastic landscape around the waterfall.
Huge cathedral-like caves with walls of hexagonal stone-pipes surrounds the pond below the cascade, where nothing but stone and water exists.
As earlier described, such hexagonal columns are formed inside lava flows that cools extremely slowly,
which again causes crystallization to appear.
