philo s maniatty, was my uncle who flew on a b-17f , he was a navigator. flew 40 missions on his 40th they dropped their pay load, but were badly dammaged and became a straggler behind the formation, it was( nov 16th 1943) 25 miles off the norther n coast of france. the nazi fighters pounced all over them. need less to say the fortress went down there were no survivors. he was 22 yrs. old god bless them all!

Very interesting pictures.
Photo 14 depicts Blechhammer south chemical plant, today Zaklady Azotowy Kedzierzyn SA located south of the city of Kedzierzyn, Poland. Right to the diagonal border of the target drawn where located Labor camps and 2 british labour bataillons depending of the Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf, this place was named Bieraulager, today village of Bierawa.

It depicts the island of Saint Mandrier located south of Toulon, France where guns and battery where located.

Fantastic and historical gallery ... voted. I've given the link to this gallery to a close friend of mine who was a Navigator on B-24's during the war and he participated in a number of these missions. What I found most fascinating was the link to the WWII Combat Chronology. In any event, Randy, many thanks for this gallery ... awesome.

Interesting material. One my parents' neighbors was a bombardier-navigator on B-24 Liberators flyng out of Africa and Italy. This is quite a gallery. I think a lot of people these days don't really connect with the immensity of that war.

Randy, these are both fascinating and in some ways horrifying. Yes, I know we were "the good guys." But do understand, I bombed folks too (dropped napalm and CS in Viet Nam). What we are dealing in is death. So, yes, these are historic but still hard to look at. I am glad you put them up. Hope someone who was there is still alive and this helps them in some way. Great stuff! My father, who passed away four years ago, was a pilot in the US Army Air Core on the B17 Bomber stationed in England. He flew many of the missions these pictures were intended for. He was shot down two times.
