Holbrook is a short way off I-40, a bit west of Petrified Forest. At one time this was part of the legendary Route 66. Since we knew we would be running out of daylight by our return from the South Rim to Williams, we booked one night in the Wigwam Motel, a taste of the 1950s! Note that the wigwams are actually constructed of steel and concrete, so there are no fluttering flaps in breezy conditions. They also have air conditioning and some WiFi connectivity. The large gravel parking area has all sorts of cars going back to at least the early 1950s. (This spot just begged for some B&:W film photos!)
By current standards these are rather spartan, but for one night it was fun and we can say we did it. There is an interesting looking steakhouse just a block or two east, but alas, having arrived late, they were closing. We went a few blocks further and found Mr Maestas Family Restaurant which had good food and also an incredible array of kitschy antique toys and the like hung all over everywhere; good fun.
This was part of the Grand Tour 2016, a 5800 mile drive through flyover country!
