23 November 2017, Thanksgiving Day, or as Ye Olde Photographer, prefers, "Turkey Day" for the most common protein entree, was celebrated in Roanoke, Virginia. we joined friends from the western end of Pennsylvania at the Hotel Roanoke to celebrate. We began our morning in the historic district, easily accessed on foot from our hotel.
We started with a hearty breakfast at Scrambled at the City Market in the old historic district. Following that we wandered around and saw some of the "Drumstick Dash," a 5K run and family walk to raise funds to help the homeless and disadvantaged. There were several thousand participants and we were impressed by the visibly obvious community spirit. It was helpful that our T-Day visit was blessed with decent weather. Cold — near or below freezing at night — but warmer and fairly sunny during the days we were there.
So here we offer some odds and ends of the morning and afternoon, including a rather spectacular buffet dinner in the ballroom at the Hotel Roanoke where we were staying. There was a wide variety of tasty foods offered. The appetizer table included two varieties of cured salmon, oysters on the half shell, and shrimp among the offerings. There were salads, bread and rolls, spoon bread, herbed stuffing, and assorted veggies. Besides turkey, there was pork loin, baked salmon, and prime rib. Add in a dessert table with quite an assortment of choices including Dutch apple pie, pumpkin pie, and chocolate mousse. No one left hungry! All accompanied by live piano music from one of those guys who could seemingly play anything and with a light, improvisatory feel.
