There have been an embarrassing number of attempts to produce a ceramic drip catcher for the gas grill. The intent is to replace somewhat expensive aluminum foil pans that don't hold up very well. The biggest problem is to control dimensions in something that can shrink 10 to 15% in firing. This pass, we created a large flange with a relatively small shrinkage allowance in the hope that if the pan portion came out on the small side, the wide rim would still catch the drips. And by golly, it appears the plan has worked!
