This is a sixty-two mile trail following the former New York Central rail line that originally connected from Jersey Shore, outside of Williamsport, PA, to Corning, NY. The northern terminus is at Wellsboro. Traveling south, below Ansonia, the trail enters Pine Creek Gorge, a 1000-foot deep gorge sometimes called the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania" or "Penn's Canyon."
The stretch from Darling Run south through the gorge to Blackwell is approximately 18 miles of relatively isolated travel. From Blackwell south, there are a few very small towns; Cedar Run, Slate Run and Cammal to name some, and the creek valley is generally wider. Most of the length is surrounded with heavily forested mountains.
This was a quick visit on a clear and pleasant October afternoon for just a short walk northward from Blackwell Access Area. The trail appears to be very well maintained, with a wide and smooth surface of rolled cinders. We left feeling encouraged to return with bicycles and more time.
