The 2013 Turkey Day Expedition was centered on Shepherdstown, West Virginia, but a very short distance from the inn in which we stayed was a bridge over the Potomac River. Just beyond the far end of that bridge was access to the C&O Canal Trail, a former towpath now a recreational trail stretching from western Maryland to DC. Only a few more miles from that point was Sharpsburg, and above that, Antietam Battlefield, scene of one of the bloodiest battles in the American Civil War.
