On February 20, 2008, the MCCC Ceramics Club was privileged to see a demonstration by Kari Radasch, a talented potter from Westbrook, Maine.
Kari's latest work is redware with some unusual decoration. She showed a wide assortment of techniques for producing pieces. Much of her work is hand built using slab and coil, often over hump molds or slump molds. She has been doing a lot of work with bisque fired clay molds instead of the common plaster molds. She makes much use of a heavy banding wheel to turn and shape built up pieces in ways that are used in thrown work. This perhaps suggests a new word for the vocabulary -- "throilng" -- as a humorous combination of throwing and coiling.
Ms Radasch worked quickly, with great energy. Her friendly, happy demeanor connected well with an enthusiastic audience.
The day was broken down as:
* Some building and mold making in the morning
* A pot luck lunch (Ye Olde Photographer was too busy eating to record it)
* Slides showing important people, events, scenes and colors that inform her work, as well as examples of earlier work
* The afternoon featured some additional building, and some glazing techniques
This was Ye Olde Photographer's first serious outing with his new toy and he's quite pleased, especially with the fast response.
