At this point the effort is to carefully nestle some large pieces across the top. At the left of the young
woman's elbow you can see a pack of pyrometric cones that will be used to check firing temperature; another is
at the bottom left just inside the door. These are calibrated pieces that slump at various temperatures.
A range is used to see when the target is nearly reached. These firings typically target "Cone 10," about 2380ºF.
