Fort Harrison State Park is an adaptive redevelopment of the former Fort Benjamin Harrrison, on the northeast side of Indianapolis. There are still some Defense Department related facilities, but much of the extensive space is now a 1700 acre park with trails for walking, cycling and horseback riding. In addition there are picnic areas, campgrounds, a golf course, lake and some buildings that can be rented for events. There is a visitor center and a couple of museums and historic districts.
Just south of the state park entrance on Post Road is a building that was originally, we believe, an office building on the base (which at one point did a lot of behind the scenes paperwork for DoD). The building is now Fort Harrison Inn, a hotel. Ye Olde Photographer and his Faire Spouse reserved a few nights there at the end of September 2017 to be part of a family reunion sort of event. In the process, it made sense to rent one of the recreation buildings in the park for a gathering place. The building rent was very reasonable and it was equipped with plenty of tables and chairs and a full kitchen. In addition there were a bunch of picnic tables outside which we were able to use for a major pumpkin carving activity. (We even had good weather!)
In the base area south of the state park, there are business office campuses, and some eating places, as well as some newly built residential developments. One could at last take advantage of the rarely found "Peace Dividend" gained from ending the cold war.
As a documentary, this gallery falls way short, as we were quite busy running around picking up, delivering people and food, etc. Perhaps during a future visit to Indianapolis we can work in some hiking and exploring. What follows at least gives a few views. YOP provides a few shots of our "event" but we won't bore the viewers by putting up the whole pile (a larger selection is on Facebook!)
