Originally part of Birdsboro Steel Foundry and Machine Company. This plant was constructed in 1944 to provide space for the manufacture of tanks for the military. Sherman and Patton tanks were produced here through the Korean War. Operation ceased in 1988 after failure to renew a contract and also a strike. There were multiple bays, some up to 1480 feet long and 50 feet high.
At the time this gallery was started in 2011, the building was being demolished for salvage as part of a redevelopment effort. Over the next year or so, Ye Olde Photographer recorded some of that activity. The plant was next to the former Pennsylvania Railroad Schuylkill Division right-of-way that has since become part of the Schuylkill River Trail which YOP bicycles from time to time. As of late 2014, a small section of the building complex and the four tall brick stacks are the most visible remainder of this facility.
The website of an avid explorer of old things industrial has some fascinating views of the plant in earlier years.
