Diary Of A Chambermaid.
Diary Of A Chambermaid
The second screen version of Octave Mirbeau's novel (originally filmed in 1946 by Jean
Renoir), Diary of a Chambermaid charts the ambitions of Celestine (Jeanne Moreau), a woman who
comes to work in the 1930s for a Normandy estate occupied by Monsieur Rabour (Jean Ozenne),
his daughter (Francoise Lugagne), and the daughter's husband, Monsieur Montiel (Michel
Piccoli). Celestine quickly learns that M. Rabour is a more or less harmless boot fetishist,
his daughter a frigid woman more concerned with the family furnishings than in returning the
affections of her husband, who, in turn, can't keep his hands off the servants. The
gamekeeper, Joseph (Georges Geret), is a fascist who keeps his masters informed of all the
doings downstairs, and the next-door neighbor (Daniel Ivernel) is a veteran who can't stand
Monteil and is sharing a bed with his housekeeper. Celestine picks her way through this
minefield carefully, spurning the advances of all of the men until it's convenient for her. ~

The Bakers Wife.
The Baker's Wife (La Femme de Boulanger), though based on a novel by Jean Giono, was specially tailored by writer/director Marcel Pagnol for the talents of the incomparable Raimu. The star plays the new baker in the French community of Provence. One of Raimu's first customers is shepherd Charles Moulin, who is immediately smitten by the middle-aged baker's young, toothsome wife Ginette LeClerc. In short order, Ginette runs off with Moulin, a turn of events that the stubborn Raimu refuses to acknowledge. As he grows more taciturn, he neglects his work, and soon the whole village anxiously awaits the wife's return, else they'll never see another loaf of bread. The local Marquis (Charpin) takes matters in hand by leading the townsfolk in a search party for the wayward wife. The charms of The Baker's Wife are both captivating and fragile; an attempt in 1976 to turn the property into a Broadway musical proved the fragility by ignoring the charm.

The bride Wore Black
This Francois Truffaut thriller is based ona novel by William Irish (aka Cornell Woolrich),
whose books had been adapted by Alfred Hitchcock on many previous occasions. Jeanne Moreau
stars as a woman whose fiancé is nastily murdered by five men. Utilizing a series of
disguises, the cool-customer Moreau tracks down all five culprits, sexually enslaves them, and
then engineers their deaths. The ominous musical score was written by Bernard Herrmann,
another frequent Hitchcock collaborator. The Bride Wore Black was initially released in France
as La Mariee etait en Noir. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
