Our Afghan Hound Companions

For three decades we've had the good fortune to have wonderful Afghan Hounds for companions. They're a source of constant beauty, joy, and amusement. They enrich our lives in a multitude of ways. This breed isn't for everyone: Afghan Hounds are enegetic, intelligent, highly independent and sometimes stubborn, and very grooming-intensive.

Our first affie was Keia and we eventually adopted her litter mate Anoush. Both remain very much alive in our memories and our hearts. They were followed by Sparkie and Katie, her lifelong companion. Sparkie passed on to the Rainbow Bridge in August 2003 and we, and Katie, were heartbroken. Of course, there's only one remedy for this kind of heartbreak. Jupiter became a member of our family on November 9, 2003, when Katie was nearly 12 years old and he was nearly two. Jupiter was devoted to Katie, and she loved him dearly. We're convinced that he helped to extend her life and certainly contributed to its quality. When Katie passed in March 2006, Jupiter was quite lonely for canine companionship. In June of that same year, black and tan Mateo joined our pack. Jupe and Teo are very close and are enjoying the good life together.

In February 2012, Mateo's sweet sister Muchacha joined our pack. She's been a wonderful addition and Jupiter and Mateo are delighted that she's here.

Every one of our hounds has been special and unique. Every one has touched our hearts and left an indelible mark on our souls. For all the time and attention they command, their gifts to us are far greater.

I gave an Affie to my wife as a wedding present in 1971 .....daft as it may seem it was an inspired pressie and Netheroyd Black Marquis (his kennel name) was some dog, a joy to all who knew him. We had the pleasure of his company, his grace and his magnificence for almost 12 years during which time he saved my life and that of a Beardie Collie with me at the time from drowning, won numerous prizes at dog shows in UK and gues what ? we named him PLOD which was down to a personal matter from our courting days. Affies are difficult being imperious creatures, certainly above us mere mortals, but by golly they are worth the effort, worth all the time my good Lady dedicated to grooming him. Even now going on 25 years since we lost him we miss him still....there never was a better Affie than PLOD.

Angela, thanks for your note. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have our two Afghan Hounds. They require a lot of attention, and, as you might imagine, are very "grooming intensive." They tend to be quite independent, even willful, although ours have also been extremely affectionate. They're not a breed for everyone. But, if you're willing to make the commitment, owning them can be a very special experience.
