The Moon and The 50D

On July 9, 2009 I got bored so I started to shoot the moon again. I used the 50D with the 400 F5.6 L, the 1.4x II TC, and the 2x II TC. I noticed some degradation of quality using the 2x II TC, but I really wanted the extra reach. With both TC's on the 400mm lens I got 1120mm. Multiply that with the 1.6x crop factor of the 50D, that's 1792mm.

These are my latest moon shots. The first column contains the cropped and resized shots. The second column contains the one exposure HDR output of the first column shots. The last column contains the uncropped and resized shots.

In 2008 I had the 400mm lens plus the 1.4x II TC (no 2x II TC yet) so I had a focal length of only 560mm (effective focal length 400mm x 1.4 x 1.6 = 896mm). I bought a 2x II TC recently so my new effective focal length is 896mm x 2 = 1792mm. If you look at the third column you will see a bigger moon in the shot frame than my 2008 shots.

More...one of the things I learned this year was 1/15 shutter speed was the limit for moon shots. If I went slower than that I got motion blur. If I bumped up the ISO then I got more noise. My take on this? Next time I will play safe and make 1/20 my limit for shutter speed.

My next goal is to shoot the planets. I need an excellent telescope, an excellent CCD webcam, a good stacking software, and a good night for "seeing". I will also try to shoot the planets with a DSLR just for comparison. Based on the shots I saw on the internet the webcam shots blew away the DSLR shots.
