On July 9, 2009 I got bored so I started to shoot the moon again. I used the 50D with the 400 F5.6 L, the 1.4x II TC, and the 2x II TC. I noticed some degradation of quality using the 2x II TC, but I really wanted the extra reach. With both TC's on the 400mm lens I got 1120mm. Multiply that with the 1.6x crop factor of the 50D, that's 1792mm.
This was my first time to shoot the moon...no kidding! Actually I procastinated for quite some time already! One night in a parking lot in LA I saw the moon sandwiched between 2 tall buildings. One of the buildings was the one shown in the movie Independence Day. I didn't bring a camera that day so I said "D-OH!" to myself.
I used the 40D with the 400 F5.6 L and the 1.4x II TC...that's 560mm. Multiply that with the 1.6x crop factor of the 40D, that's 896mm.
Hmmm!
The truth is...I was disappointed when somebody wrote in dpreview that blue moons do not actually exist. So I just took one of my moon shots...adjusted the color temperature...tinkered with the hue a bit...tweaked the exposure...and then edited the EXIF info to simulate New Year's eve.
This shot is uncropped...effective focal length 1792mm (1120mm x 1.6 (crop factor of 50D))...
