On October 4, 2009 my brother Joe and I went to the Miramar MCAS in San Diego for their annual air show.
This was a practice air show shoot for me prior to the annual Edwards Air Force Base air show coming in a few days.
I brought the 1Ds3 and 2 lenses...the 135L and the 400 F5.6 L. Next time I will bring 3 lenses...the 24-70L, the 70-200 F4 IS L, and the 400 F5.6 L. Why bring the 24-70L? Well...it's so that I don't have to step far back to get a full body shot of the planes when they are on the tarmac.
More...you will notice the frozen propellers in some of my shots. The next time I do this I will try to shoot at a much lower shutter speed to show some motion in those propellers.
On October 17, 2009 my brother Joe and I went to Edwards AFB for their annual air show.
I brought the 1Ds3, the 50D, and 3 lenses...the 35L, the 70-200 F4 IS L with the 1.4x II TC, and the 400 F5.6 L. I planned to use the 35L for the static display...but I never got to use it because there were just tons of people there. I put the 70-200 F4 IS L with the 1.4x II TC on the 50D...set the 50D to ISO 100, F11 to F14, shutter speed usually 1/200 or slower to catch the planes with propellers. I put the 400 F5.6 L on the 1Ds3...set the 1Ds3 to ISO 200, F5.6, shutter speed of 1/1600 or faster to catch the jets.
More...the base provided military personnel to guide us to our parking spots in an orderly fashion...going in was quick. They also provided trolleys and buses to shuttle us to the show entrance. That was great!
Getting out was a different story. The buses and trolleys were still provided, but there was almost no order when people tried to drive their cars out of the base. There were lots of bottlenecks...heavy traffic. I guess the base soon found this out and provided some personnel to guide people out of the base...but I think they were undermanned. It took us 4 hours just to get out of that base.
BTW...I missed the sonic boom test by 5 minutes.
Oh well! Better luck next year!
On November 15, 2009 my brother Joe and I went to Nellis AFB in Nevada for their annual air show.
I brought the 1Ds3 with the 400 F5.6 L lens, and the 50D with the 70-200 F4 IS L lens and the 1.4x II TC. I used the 50D to shoot the planes with propellers, the 1Ds3 to shoot the jets. But sometimes I switched them around.
IMHO the perfect setup to shoot the planes in flight is the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV with the Canon 300mm F2.8 L IS USM lens...or the Nikon D3s with the Nikkor 200-400mm F4 G-AFS ED-IF VR lens. My choice? The Nikon of course...I don't have any brand loyalty.
More...the Nellis AFB provided buses to shuttle us in and out of the base. We didn't need to walk very far (in contrast we walked a few miles in the Miramar MCAS). The security check was very quick and efficient. We are very thankful to this base for providing excellent service.
By chance we got the same bus driver in and out of the base. He was overweight and had crooked teeth...he had curly hair (bald in the middle) like Larry Fine from the 3 Stooges...and he gave some corny jokes...but IMHO he was a genuinely happy person. To me that's the most important thing of all. Good for him!
