Small o-ring on '76-and-later motors.

If there is a recess in the cylinder base on the jug for the small o-rings, they MUST be used. They seal in the oil leaving the block for the heads so your rocker arm assemblies get oil. Blocking this passage, or leaking internally, is bad news for your rocker arm assemblies.
