Message from Mike Conroy
Hi - I'm basically just a guy who likes travelling, climbing hills & mountains and playing a bit of music but these hobbies of mine present me with the opportunity to record the things that make me happy, make me smile.
I'm not really a photographer, but I do have an eye for a good shot I think. So if you folks can accept me at that level, then enjoy!
I would be very grateful for comments and criticism (good or bad - I can take it!) in order that I can improve.
Some of you guys are awesome photographers so all help welcomed.
I was born & raised in Smyth County, VA and it annoys me sometimes when I hear folks complainin' 'bout handouts given to "White Trash" from the mountains. I hope once you read the words to this song, you'll understand things a bit better.
Appalachian Man
Coal cars from the mountains snake through a valley floor
burdened by a heavy load bound for a distant shore.
day after day will they ever learn
the part of us they take away never does return.
(chorus)
Take it all away, 'till you can take no more.
leave us here with nothin' then you write about our poor.
the scars will never heal from this wounded land,
but nothin' breaks the spirit of an appalachian man.
They say our education is way behind the times
but two plus two still equals four and two nickels are still a dime.
here we learn quite early just how to say our name
no where in appalachia do you find a hard long "a"
We're never in a hurry, they say our gait is slow
they say that we talk funny and use words that they don't know.
the reason we walk slowly is that we've worked hard all day,
and we say just what we mean and we mean just what we say.
So -take it all away, 'till you can take no more.
leave us here with nothin' then you write about our poor.
the scars will never heal from this wounded land,
but nothin' breaks the spirit of an appalachian man.
Thankin' you for your time
Take care & God bless.
Mike
