June 1- PAD Meetup

Since we both live in Bakersfield,
We might do it again : )

June 4- Cattle Ranch/Wind Farm
Took a drive up to the Tehachapi Wind Farms today.
In the distance is Mojave and the Antelope Valley.

June 6- A Simple Windmill
Today, no dramatic sky, no wind turbines,
no "Kessler Effect".
Just a simple, old fashioned windmill.
It probably hasn't worked in a while
but retains it's beauty in the context of the land
upon which it sits.

Two Roads
I had to go to California City on business today.
It's a town about 75 miles East of Bakersfield,
on the edge of the Mojave Desert.
I swear that many of the roads to people's homes are like these.
Good clouds for me : )
California City has one prison,
one landowners' resort,
one PGA golf course
and one stop light.

B/W Roads
Trying to do a kind of
Ansel Adams thing here.
("I knew Ansel Adams.
Doug,you're no Ansel Adams")
Many people have commented
that I have pasted skies
or used HDR on some of
my images.
I'm not very good at
pasting into images and
I'm not real sure how HDR works
(although it looks intriguing).
Going out for an anniversary dinner tonight.
See you all on the flip side : )

June 13- Swing Kids

Okay, so it's a Sunday picture

June 15- The Saturn gets gas
I've been awfully busy this week
with kids blowing placements right and left.
Had to make two trips to California City yesterday.
So, this was a fairly common sight for me this week.
The week feels like a blur.....
Don't know why I like selective color so much.
It feels like therapy when I paint back in the color.
Probably something Freudian : )

June 16- SP
Sometimes it's good to revisit the pioneers.
Mathew Brady (1823-1896)
Brady's efforts to document the Civil War on a grand scale by bringing his photographic studio right onto the battlefields earned Brady his place in history. Despite the obvious dangers, financial risk, and discouragement of his friends he is later quoted as saying "I had to go. A spirit in my feet said 'Go,' and I went." His first popular photographs of the conflict were at the First Battle of Bull Run, in which he got so close to the action that he only just avoided being captured.

June 18- Loading Dock
20th and P St., Bakersfield

June 19- Jenck's Tire Co.
This was actually taken on Sunday
but I was surprised that it was closed
and yet here were all these tires
(some good, some not)
just out there, sitting...Oh well : )
This is all I got today. Busy day

June 21- Monolith Cement Plant
This is Monolith, about 50 miles East of Bakersfield.
In the early '80s, the Calavaris Cement Company
purchased the property and replaced the original factory
(exhausted and worn out by this time)
with the ultra modern facility that operates in its place today.
In its 51 years Monolith Portland Cement produced
more than 110 million barrels of cement
-- enough to build a two-lane highway around the world.
This is the tallest man-made structure in Kern County.
It rises over 400 feet tall.
For some scale, if you look closely just above the cows,
you can see some train cars.

June 24- Hot
It's 104 degrees outside and expected to be 108 tomorrow!
Our A/C went out and we've been waiting since yesterday
for the guy to show up.
Doug is not a happy camper today : (
I hope it's cooler where you are.
What am I saying,
it HAS to be cooler where you are!
