There was a time when the Royale was the "Queen of the Highway". Highway 99, that is.
With a modern sign and the latest amenities, they got their share of travelers.
Coffee was free for the guests.
Just down the road was the world famous Bakersfield Inn.
Those were the "Salad Days".
In the 1960s they built the bypass. State Highway 99.
Traffic flowed through Bakersfield without even having to stop.
It was the beginning of the end for so many.
Even as "Business 99" the Royale was the Queen.
