Jackson Pollock (1912-1956)struggled with depression and alcoholism his entire life. His two brothers, who roomed with him in New York (both also artists), encouraged him to enter therapy, which he did. Some say it may have helped him with the depression, but it did little for his drinking problem.
Although Pollock's "drip" or "splatter" paintings were initially met with mixed reviews, he would get the national recognition he deserved. In 1949, after LIFE magazine did a feature on him, his fame was cemented. It is said that his greatest works were created during this period. Therefore painting No. 15 (photographed here) could be considered one of his masterpieces.
