Yes, people, listen to Mike! This junction, Cow Street Junction, has now been filled with lovely paving stones and is "manned" by some efficient women police during rush hour traffic. Yes, the vendors are still there and the taxis still tend to slow down the traffic, but the place is much cleaner and filled with music. Bamenda is the best! People are friendly, helpful and generous. The hills are beautiful with various flowers all year round. The climate is easy with sunny warm days and cooler nights. Food, especially fruits and vegetables abound, and nothing is better than the smell of roasting fish, plantains, plums and soya. In Cameroon, Bamenda is the place to be!

Bemenda is capital of the North West Provice and has about 2 million inhabitants. It now has a military base set up by the corrupt Biya Government to check the SDF opposition. It has one main street, the commercial avenue that runs in the heart of the town to Nkwen and out to Mankon. Achu and kanda or gari and okro soup is the staple food. Fru Ndi and Ben Nkwenti have the tallest buildings along the commercial avenue and are occupied by PMUC and UMc banks. Bribery is in place and faymen are all over the place so look out for your wallet or 'cut purser go make you". Malaria and HIV is all over and the young die every day because they are raped and infected by military and police officers with impunity. The biya government does not care about this provice becuase it is the strongest opposition area. Most of the young people of this area are dead or out on exile. the majority have sought asylum in US, Canada or are day laborers in Europe.

Bamenda is a big city negleted by the CPDM government because it is the stronghold of the SDF the one time predominant opposition party. The road network is horrible. It is one of the dirtiest towns (especially the markets) and when it rains, the whole place is flooded. Bribery and curruption is the order of the day and the police collect caps of beer for a free drink as bribe. There are no industries and subsitent farming is the main occupation. Promiscuity is unferttered and HIv has cotaminated the young age. Small busness is in place but struggling agianst high taxation and corrupt government practices.

i get emotional when i look at this. When we were growing up, It looked normal. Coming to the US, now it looks ugly to me. Where I grew up. ( tears)

I was in Cameroon in December and I remember this place. We lived just further in Mile 3. I MISS THIS PLACE. Yes you hae to dodge the potholes and the hustle and bustle of all kinds of taxis but the place has a kind of peace that you cannot easily find anwhere else in the world. I wish I can go back soon!

This place is still like this? I wish, one day to come back home with all my friends out here in the US, to see how Africa really looks like, despite of the poverty, the place is good and funky

This picture is very strategic and speaks loudly to those who know this area. Despite the poverty we still LOVE our country.
