You have taken some great pictures. I purchased a Canon 70-300 DO IS USM lens for a trip from Cape Town, through Namibia, Botswana and ending in Victoria Falls. I took many pictures with this lens at full zoom (300mm) and this lens is touted by Canon that it is image stablized and has sharp image quality. I spent $1200+ for this lens and every one of my 300 mm zoom images was totally worthless. They are ALL out of focus. I took many shots from 70 to 200mm and those are fine. But I purchased this lens for its ability to zoom to 300 mm and this lens is useless at that zoom range. All my images are so out of focus, I can't use any of them. This is a total waste of money and ruined my trip, and now Canon won't refund my money that I wasted on this worthless piece of crap lens. Would yo pay $1200 for a 70 - 200 mm lens, because that is all you're getting. A total, total waste of money.

lovely pictures, and was only loking on this site for reviews on this lens as i am going to kenya this year, and was torn between the 70-300 and the 70-200 F4 L. your pics have helped me decide, that it is the 70-300 i will be getting, as the quality looks great. i find your style very similar to Nick Brandt (only yours are colour ).

Wow, this is an amazing collection of wildlife images. You have captured so many species in their natural settings. Going on a photo safari has always been a dream. This gallery is almost as good. Gets my vote. Thanks for sharing your incredible images.

Hi, Joan; I have been very happy with the performance of the Canon bodies. The 1Ds was borrowed/rented, and I found it less intuitive to use than the 350D (aka Digital Rebel XT), but it still worked well. Since these photographs were taken, I have sold the 350D and bought a 5D, which, although it has 12.8 megapixels and a full-sized sensor like the 1Ds, is much lighter than the 1Ds and handles more like the 350D. So, for me, the 5D is the best of both worlds. Apart from the relatively high price, the only complaints that resonate with me are 1) that it has no built-in flash and 2) that the continuous-shooting rate is only 3 fps. Oh, and it would be nice to have an easier way to lock up the mirror. But for my use the good points greatly outweigh those drawbacks.

Fantastic shots, Doug. You have a wonderful eye. I'm thinking about the canon 70-300 (I own the 350d, like yourself) and was wondering just how much post production went into the shots. Can I expect similar quality regarding colour, contrast and sharpness from the lens shots alone? Thanks mate.

Strangely enough, I also got the "white" sky phenomenon like in some of your shots (like the zebra background). Not sure if CPL would help or not

Almost all were shot RAW, so there was no sharpening in the camera, only in post-processing. By the way, don't you think "everything is way oversharpened" might just be a bit of an overstatement? :)

Thanks for your comment, newbie2005. I wanted to "set and forget", and couldn't count on high light levels. Since IS doesn't help with subject motion, I wanted to keep the shutter speeds up, and as I've observed that 200 gives very acceptable noise levels (or "grain"), I was most comfortable leaving it there.

great photos! just one question: i noticed you shot your canon 70-300 IS shots at ISO200, why? it looks to me like you had fast enough shutterspeeds to allow ISO100, is there any particular reason you chose 200? awesome photos, im loving that canon 7-300. cheers.
