The Tekkiye Suleymaniye التكية السليمانية complex Designed by the famous Ottoman architect Sinan, whose masterpieces like the Selimiye mosque in Edirne can be viewed on my Turkey designed this complex starting 1553. It was built on the site of a palace, of Baibar called the Ablaq Palace, that was destroyed by Tamerlane. That there is an earlier complex below its ground may be the reason why the ground in the courtyard of its medrese looked like a sea in motion. The mosque proper was being restored, I visited in when I saw a group of Turkish tourists enter the (closed) gate on their way to a number of graves of what were called “sultans” (I am still checking which). Since I speak some Turkish I managed to get in too. The complex is next to the Damascus museum, if you get a chance, go and see it.
Hi ! I just wanted to share some information about the "Sultan" grave in Damascus. It belongs to Sultan Vahdettin (or Mehmet VI) He is the last sultan of Ottoman Empire. He was dethroned when the Turkish Republic was proclaimed. He was sent to exile and 4 years later died penniless in Italy. His body was brought to Damascus and burried there. Other graves in that graveyard belongs to some other members of Ottoman family who died in exile.
