Aleppo Madrasa Othmaniye 9902.jpg

view map

Outside the west gate of the Madrasa Othmaniye, shortly after passing the Bab al-Nasr (Gate of Victory). The Madrasa is from 1730-1738, was endowed by Othman Pasha al-Duraki, and has the highest minaret amongst the classical mosques in Aleppo, in the round Turkish style. A large courtyard has the prayer hall on the south, preceded by a three-domed portico and flanked by two iwans. 42 student rooms surround the other sides of the court. Indeed I came across some men who seemed to be rote-memorizing the Koran or seemed to be correcting what others made of it.
