I left the site thinking I had not taken a picture of the piece de resistance, the remaining part of the column on which St. Simeon lived. To my relieve I found I had not forgotten it utterly: the almost egg-shaped piece of stone to the right is it. Visitors have chipped at it, and as nowadays every other visitor wants to climb it it is getting increasingly small. Would "religious erosion" be the proper phrase?
