Having passed the monument we now go to the East where we first pass along a rivulet that seems to be the Banyas Stream. Along it are some nice old houses. Opposite them is the flank of the citadel.

The citadel was erected in 1078 by the Seljuks, a Turkish people, using stone taken from the walls of the city. It has a moat, but unlike any other citadel in Syria does not lie on higher ground, but is level with the city. The citadel has been overhauled several times. I did not find it opened, so can only show shots of its outside.
