This سوق الحميدية is a bazar street that is special because it is on a grand scale, it has a grander aspect than the other suqs, which have longer histories, are more intimate. It was built under the Ottoman Sultan Abd al-Hamid II (1876-1909), following a former Roman axis, that probably connected to the western side of the temple of Jupiter, where we now find the Umayyad Mosque. That roman area had deteriorated. The originally wooden roof of the suq has been replaced in 1912 by a metal one.
