Glorification of the Earth

This is the mosaic called "Glorification of the Earth". The persons on this mosaic are Greek deities. A woman, surrounded by small children with plates full of fruit, indicating the fertility of the earth. A man seizes a bull, symbolizing ploughing and agriculture. Four women to the left stand for the four seasons. On top and in the middle four heads represent the winds, blowing to the four directions. A painter to the right with water next to him is supposed to remind us man was made of mud and water.

It dates from the third century AD.

If you like Roman mosaics check my site of the Antakya museum, or my Gaziantep Museum, both in Turkey.
