Nymphaeum

Finished in 191 AD it is situated between the stairs leading up to on one side the Cathedral (stairs visible on some pictures), the other the Artemis Temple. Much of its glory has vanished, and a cupola which once crowned it has disappeared, as a result of which it cannot be concluded if, as is possible, this was originally a fountain façade or even a fountain hall. In the niches would have stood statues, water would be floating from the seven lions heads into the cloaca maxima. The big round basin visible in front is probably not part of the original arrangement.
