My page with very many Turkish cities

Turhal is a city near Tokat and Amasya, the region where one might speak of (the start of) Eastern Turkey. I here present pictures from a September 2004 visit, later I may add some from an earlier visit, because at that time I explored the city a bit more. It’s main feature is a nice river with teahouses along is (canalised) boards, and a Kale (citadel) on a hill that provides splendid views of the city sitting in its plain and of some fine mountain outcrops in the middle distance. I find the city mildly interesting: not many cultural sights, some fine old houses, a good park with nice teahouses. A city to spend some hours if you are in the neighbourhood.

Zile is the other city I present here, some 20 kilometres from Turhal. In a book I have it is claimed Zile may go back to Hittite times and be none other that Anziliya (because of the similarity in name), it certainly is the Roman Zela. Digs indicate it has been almost continuously inhabited from the third millennium BC. Its main claim to fame is that nearby, along the road to Amasya, Julius Caesar won the battle in 47BC on which he reported “veni, vidi, vinci” (I came, saw, conquered). The city has some very nice neighbourhoods with lots of old houses, and has in my eyes a bit more of a character of its own than Turhal. You will find no pictures this time of Ulu Camii (Big Mosque) or similar: not very impressive, and at least at the Ulu a flock of children kept me occupied. I may from old stock later put in some other pictures, because I do not want to give the impression the city lacks monuments. If you speak Turkish: the official site is at http://www.zile.bel.tr . The Ulu Camii is on it.
