In June 2010 I stayed in Siirt for one night, left, then returned a few days later. When leaving for the first time, people asked me if I’d visited Tillo. No, I had not. They obviously thought I had not properly visited Siirt. So next time I found the local transport, a group-taxi, leaving at Büyük hotel, and made the ten minute ride to Tillo. I had read the town is a very religious, almost sacred one. Indeed I found a number of mosques, as well as a big graveyard, obviously housing some “saints”. At the edge of town there’s a complex that I did not visit, with lots of cupolas and looking modern or at least recently restored. Then I went back into the old centre, and was amazed to see how much destruction was going on. I wonder if this is one of those spots where Turkish “restoration” consists of destroying the past, and then building it anew. I hope to add some captions later.
