In October 2016 I paid a visit to the Lycian former antique city of Rhodiapolis, a few kilometers from Kumluca. I found a good map of the city at a site where you can also see some pictures (in lower resolution than mine) that helped me identify buildings. Another excellent source of information is the guidebook “On the Lycian way” in the Uranus publishers’ series “Anatolian Civilizations”.

I was rather horrified to see recent “restorations” at the theatre. I had seen pictures only slightly earlier than my visit. They showed a theatre and nearby monument for a benefactor, Opramoas (who donated half a million denarii to 28 Lycian towns for reconstructions after an earthquake between 140-143 AD) as genuinely ancient. Now bright and shiny new stone had been used to reconstruct them, it almost hurt my eyes. I suppose with lots and lots of weathering they will look natural and turn out to be an improvement, for the time being I can only hope this is not another project, seen so often in Turkey, where “restorations” turn an ancient site in a Disneyland-like “attraction”.

In 2022 I reorganized many galleries. I find I have made some mistakes in naming picturss, that I am correcting. I somehow lost my bearings, calling many pictures "agora" ones, that are well below the level of the castron, the highest point. Or mistaking west for north.
