Niğde is a city south of Cappadocia, you get there after an 80 kilometers ride from Nevşehir or you pass it on your way up North when coming from Adana, Mersin. I had been there before but decided to take some fresh shots in December 2005. The weather was not as cold as the snow on the surrounding mountains might indicate. Yes, I did visit the museum but no, they would not let me take pictures. If you're there: the museum is alright (well lit, good notices) but there is nothing special unless you want to see the four or five mummies that are about a thousand years old and look scruffy. One baby-mummy had some nice cloths on, but I prefer the collection they have in Palermo, Sicily, any old time.

I have just been in a MSN-conversation with someone from another town who claims I do not show the modern Turkey enough, that is right: old houses "take better pictures". Some pictures are of monuments dating back to the 14th century, and they look better, in my mind, than the monuments now erected. But see for yourself.

NİĞDE

Niğde, Kapadokya’nın güneyinde bir şehir. Nevşehir’den 80 km’lik bir yolculuktan sonra Niğde’ye varıyorsunuz veya Adana-Mersin tarafından kuzeye giderken oradan geçiyorsunuz. Niğde’ye daha önce gitmiştim, ama Aralık 2005’te yeni resimler çekmeye karar verdim. Hava, etraftaki dağlardaki karların düşündürdüğü kadar soğuk değildi. Evet müzeyi ziyaret ettim, ama resim çekmeme izin vermediler. Oraya giderseniz, müzenin durumu iyi (iyi ışık, iyi afişler), ama özel bir şey yok, tabi yaklaşık bin yıllık ve kirli görünen dört beş mumya görmek istemiyorsanız. Bir bebek mumyanın üzerinde hoş kıyafetler vardı, ama Plermo ve Sicilya’daki herhangi bir zamana ait koleksiyonları tercih ederim.

Az önce, başka bir şehirden biriyle MSN’de konuşuyordum; modern Türkiye’yi yeterince göstermememden şikayetçi. Bu doğru; “eski evler daha iyi resim veriyor”. Bazı resimler, 14. yüzyıldan kalma anıtlara ait ve bence onlar yeni yapılanlardan daha iyi görünüyor. Ama kendiniz görün.
