The Sultan had a private loge in the New Mosque, called the hünkâr mahfili, screened off by a gilded grill so he and his party would be shielded from the public gaze. It was the outpost of a Hünkar kasrı, a set of rooms with generally their own entrance, for the sultan and his retinue. Access to this loge is gained by a ramp behind the mosque. Having been restored the ramp itself is often used for (free) exhibitions, of which I show some pictures. It leads to a suite of rooms, including a salon, bedchamber, toilet, built over a great archway. Kitchens were on a lower level. The suite served as a pied-à-terre for the Sultan when attending prayers.
