These two museums, one of them a mile or so to the West of Taksim Square, the other three miles up along the Bosporus, house some fascinating works, in particular from the Ottoman Empire. In the first are some great tents that used to house the sultan and his courtiers when on a military campaign, the other has some large barges of state, that would carry the sultan over the waters around Istanbul. A special attraction of the military museum are the concerts by the Mehter, the band of the Janisary that would, a bit like the Scottish pipers, scare the enemy out of their wits.

ASKERİ MÜZE VE DENİZ MÜZESİ

Bu müzelerin ilki Taksim Meydanı’nın batısına bir buçuk kilometre kadar uzaklıkta, diğeri ise boğazın dört buçuk kilometre yukarısındadır. Özellikle Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndan kalma bazı büyüleyici eserlere ev sahipliği yapıyorlar. Askeri Müze’de, seferdeyken padişah ve onun yardımcılarının kaldığı büyük çadırlar (otağı) var. Deniz Müzesi’nde ise, İstanbul’dayken padişahı taşımak için kullanılan sandallar sergileniyor. Geçmişte, yeniçerilerin askeri bandosu olan ve İskoç gaydacılar gibi, düşmanları korkutan Mehter Takımı’nın verdiği konserler de askeri müzenin hoş bir özelliği.
